Joint – concrete

A joint in concrete is a pre-planned crack and provide relief from tensile stress and consist of several types:

  • Contraction joint – to create weakened planes in concrete and regulate the location where cracks from resulting dimensional changes will occur.
  • Expansion or isolation joint – separate or isolate slabs from other parts of the structure. They permit independent vertical and horizontal movement between adjacent parts of a a structure and help minimise cracking.

Joint - construction

A construction joint is a surface where two successive placements of concrete meet.

Joint meters

A vibrating wire joint meter is used for monitoring movement of joints in mass-concrete structures and has a built-in thermistor for temperature monitoring.

Joint - rock

A rock joint is a natural fracture in the formation in which there is no measureable shear displacement.
