Geosense Lunch & Learns are designed to promote constructive discussions between engineers, consultants, contractors and provide an insight into the manufacture and use of geotechnical instruments.
The free sessions promote discussion and understanding of the application and performance of instrumentation. Firms who have recently hosted the sessions include Jacobs, Atkins, Sir Robert McAlpine, Aecom and Arup.
Here’s what participants are saying:
Sessions take place for around an hour, usually over the lunchtime period. Companies simply provide a meeting room and invite staff to attend.
“Our initial aim was to present a general introduction to instrumentation from the manufacturer’s point of view,” explained Geosense Commercial Manager Tim Clegg “There’s no sales pitch – it’s just an opportunity for us to share a little of our expertise and to find out what those using or specifying our products want.”
Topics covered include product selection & usage, an overview of sensors and safety monitoring instruments including installation tips, trouble-shooting, data collection and case histories followed by a Q&A forum. And, of course, free lunch.
“These sessions have been really positively received – and we hope it’s not just down to the free lunch,” added Tim. “It is a simple way for us to pass on information and to get feedback from those working in the industry. Putting consultants, contractors and manufacturers together always leads to some interesting discussions – it’s good to look at things from different perspectives. The feedback has been really positive.”
The sessions generally provide a broad outline of geotechnical instrumentation but can be tailored to cover specific interests. Specialist topics so far have included wireless sensor networks, piezometer installation - the fully grouted method and data logging.
